At terminal week's San Diego Comic-Con, the guys from IO9 defenseless up with the creators of Young Justice to discuss the return of the show for a third flavor.

At the Comic-Con press round table, creative director Phil Bourassa and producers/co-creators Brandon Vietti and Greg Weismann spoke with the press about the shows render after a long hiatus and how they want the show to develop in the future.

Brandon Vietti: I gotta recollect it's a number of things [that brought the evidence back]. I myself don't even know all the specifics. Vietti: I am hesitant to say what exactly nosotros're going to do. What we've released is that there is a meta-trafficking threat. And this is a natural progression from our starting time two seasons. When we got dorsum together and started to figure out what we're going to do for our third season, first nosotros had to wait dorsum at what we had done in our first two. And from day ane, nosotros'd been dealing with the cosmos of Superboy. Nosotros'd been dealing with genetic experimentation, creating super powered people that could be used for weapons, [while] our second flavor had aliens coming to Earth for the exact same reason as humans. "They take something called a meta-gene. What can we do with that? How tin we harvest that? And use that for ourselves?"

So, it's been a common theme. This meta-gene is just out of the bottle. Nobody knew near it in the first season. Nosotros've progressed through our stories where [in the first flavor] it was mad scientific discipline, it was secret authorities organizations that were exclusively dealing with this. Second flavour, information technology breaks up and now we've got aliens coming. This is national news now. There'south nobody on the planet, probably, that doesn't know what a meta-cistron is at this betoken.

That'due south our starting bespeak. It's a very scary world that we're starting off with in our third flavour where anybody could be kidnapped, experimented upon, and trafficked into some usage where people are beingness used equally weapons for their superpowers.

Vietti: Well, eagerly, because we were fans of the character, too. My introduction was more through the animated series that Warner Bros. did a while back. Then we were eager to bring him in and fold him into our 2nd season and begin to tell his story. We know he was a fan favorite. So nosotros wanted to find an of import role for him to play, to push him into the forefront. And we had our runway characters that paid homage to Superfriends and the characters [that show brought in] that were unique and original. Nosotros worked him into that, along with those homages to characters I grew upward with. As fans ourselves, we're very interested in pleasing the fans and the audition, and paying attention to what they want. So, that was a conscious choice for us.

Let'southward talk about your visual interpretation of him. He'southward had ii or three major looks in the comics, simply his look in Young Justice is decidedly different. Did you go through different iterations to wind up here?

Bourassa: I didn't become through them. I started on Static Shock. That was my first animation gig. Long story curt, an executive from Warner Bros. bought my indie comic way back in the twenty-four hours and gave it to Denys Cowan. He was like, "this dude is overnice" and he gave me a shot as a graphic symbol designer. I have a neat affection for that graphic symbol. That's where I started.

Then, when we did Virgil in flavour two, he was a delinquent. He was one of that group. And and so I just gave him civvies. He had a very mid '90s hip hop thing, because that's my era. And the last thing I drew in the second flavor was the Static logo, and then I was done. And then, coming dorsum to season 3—I don't want to spoil too much, just we have a lot of characters in information technology. So I [didn't] have a lot of time to marinate on one dude

There isn't—you know, not knocking everyone—at that place hasn't been one await from the comics, for Static, where I'm like, "That's the i." You know what I mean? Maybe I'll find it through his evolution in our testify or at some other indicate? But for at present, it didn't experience similar he needed to go full superhero. So, it's simply an evolution on his personal style, street fashion, whatever. He's proudly wearing a Static symbol at this point. Vietti: [The series bible] is extremely deep. Greg in particular is extremely skilful at writing bibles and tracking timelines of characters. Greg's function is the writer's room, basically, and his part is wallpapered in three to five-inch cards. I'chiliad not kidding—wallpapered. And on those cards, we have all of our characters that we've introduced, we have characters that we want to innovate, nosotros have the cities that they live in, and we're constantly aware of this DC Universe that is around u.s.. What'southward not on the wall, of course, is so some of the writing we've washed together or the timelines that he'southward created that tie all of those characters and locations together.

And whatsoever fourth dimension we bring in a new character, we have to look to the wall around us, we have to look to the timelines, we take to make certain that the intersections of whatsoever new characters we pull into the evidence piece of work and make sense. I love the challenge—all of it. Sometimes the bottom known characters are the most fun because you have the nearly latitude. Nobody cares what you lot do. I e'er go back to Professor Ojo. Nobody cares about Professor Ojo. I think the but affair that Greg told me was, "as long as he has a moustache." I was like, "Okay. Done."

Information technology's really difficult to nail Wonder Woman and Superman because y'all're going to mess up somebody's favorite version no affair what y'all do. Then, I fail at that every time. But at the same time, the exploration is role of the fun, and yous just have to do your all-time and make it work for the context of the new narrative that we're trying to create, and be reverent of the themes of the graphic symbol. And I remember that collectively in this group, and definitely in other collaborators elsewhere, everybody loves the characters. Nosotros research information technology. We don't take it lightly.

The stuff that nosotros showed today, all those characters are unmistakable. Tim Drake's costume is a trivial more than tricked out. There'southward a little more detailing. He's got the hood at present. The series evolves. It always seems a little bit darker, without going too dark. Every bit the characters get older, they naturally lend themselves to a more mature take, more than sophistication in the detailing. I experience like if I blueprint a character and you guys tin can't tell who information technology is, then I missed the mark. It gets actually tricky when there are no expert versions of a graphic symbol, or there'due south nothing recognizable, yous know? But I e'er try to keep it true-blue so it passes for what's been done—what nosotros telephone call a "squint examination." Like if you squint, [you can nonetheless figure out] "Aye, that's Spoiler." Or, "That'southward Tim Drake." Or, "That's Static Shock." Or whatever.

Bourassa: That was and then long agone, man! It's hard to choice characters that yous like—"when are you lot going to requite me this grapheme?"—when they literally give me every character to exercise, you know? Merely I honey the Quaternary World stuff. I like Jack Kirby's Space Odyssey—it could be DC's Star Wars. And we visited that earth merely for a fiddling bit in the first season and I had a blast looking at Jack Kirby [art] and mixing in some Moebius influences. I'd love to go back there.

"The Beauty and Charming Applesauce of Superheroes"

Bourassa offered his thoughts on balancing the believability of practical design and the brightly coloured over-the-top symbolic legacy of superhero costumes.

Bourassa: Well, information technology's a virtue of the medium. We don't accept to explain information technology all. These guys love to make me justify "how does this really piece of work?" Brandon is very much most "it has to feel real." But I want information technology to be colourful and bold and fun, as well. So, nosotros bounce ideas off each other, how to make it believable and practical and realistic and good for the cosplayers, also. I mean, they can actually make those outfits.

I'm e'er going to try to push the fun and the colour, the dazzler and the charming absurdity of superheroes. They're ridiculous. That's why nosotros love them.

Next Generations and Kingly Inspirations

Weisman was asked what other new characters are coming to the third season, equally well as how Jack Kirby'due south influence lives on in Young Justice .

Weisman: We just revealed a Spoiler just I'm not going to give whatever existent spoilers. Okay, I'll give you one other spoiler: We've got Bash Bashford in season three. [Note: that'due south a very obscure graphic symbol from old Superboy comics. He'southward got superpowers from eating bananas that grew on a planet in a cherry-sun solar system. Seriously.]

But fourth dimension does pass. You know, Mera was pregnant in flavour i. We oasis't seen their kid but, at some point, as we motility through time, y'all're going to start seeing some of this progeny.

In season one and 2, we had quite a bit of Kirby influence in there. Everything from Sphere to the Forever People to K. Gordon Godfrey, and we revealed Darkseid at the end of flavour two. The dues is upped on the Fourth Globe stuff in season three; I don't recall that'due south a surprise to everyone. I'm not going to go into whatever details simply, if you similar the Kirby DC stuff, then you'll like season 3. Information technology may not be what you're expecting, though.

Merely the Kirby influence is definitely in there, but as there's Neb Finger, Siegel and Shuster, and Bob Kane. We are not shy well-nigh taking characters from any era and trying to go to the core of those characters and make them [fit] more within the Earth-16 context.
