In September 2020, CBS announced that the first season would be made available on Netflix in October 2020 in order to generate attention for the upcoming second season.

There are subliminal puzzle pieces that are scattered in the show that flash in 1 frame. They are usually in a place where they don't pop out too much at the viewer-- like in the first frame of a shot, or in a brighter part of the frame. There are no puzzle pieces in the pilot. And the others contain somewhere between three and eight puzzle pieces. There is a line in the third where the exorcist character says... "We are fighting the worst enemy on earth, and their only vulnerability is they reveal themselves in symbols and numbers. They can't help it. God draws in straight lines. The devil draws in puzzles and anagrams."

On October 22, 2019, CBS renewed the series for a second season.

This show uses a lot of Dutch angles for camera shots, which involves setting the camera at an angle on its roll axis so that the shot is composed with vertical lines at an angle to the side of the frame, or so that the horizon line of the shot is not parallel with the bottom of the camera frame. This cinematic technique is normally used to portray psychological uneasiness or tension in the subject being filmed, which would fit the theme of the series.

Pilot filmed quietly in Harrison, NY, on one of the most exclusive streets in Westchester.

CBS ordered a pilot for the potential series in January 2019, created by the writing team Robert and Michelle King. A series order was officially made in May 2019.

The creators of the show are Robert and Michelle King, the creators of The Good Wife and The Good Fight

Vondie Curtis-Hall, who plays Mike Colter's character's father, had a recurring role in Marvel's Daredevil, which takes place within the same universe as Mike Colter's previous show, Marvel's Luke Cage.

Renée Elise Goldsberry, who plays the church's defense lawyer Renée Harris, had a recurring role on the Kings' previous show, The Good Wife, as assistant states attorney Geneva Pine.

Karen Pittman also had a recurring role in Mike Colter's previous show, Marvel's Luke Cage.

Mike Colter has played a character name David/Dave four times: Law and Order: Criminal Intent (TV, 2007) American Horror Story: Coven (TV, 2014) Extinction (Film, 2018) Evil (TV, 2019 - Present)

It was announced in Oct. 2021 that actor Peter Scolari, who played Father Thomas Marx, passed away after a two-year battle with cancer. Evil co-creator and showrunner Robert King wrote several tweets about the actor, calling him "one of the funniest--sneakily funny--actors we've worked with," he said. "He always took a nothing scene and found different ways to twist it, and throw in odd pauses that made it jump. I will try to collect my thoughts more. He was just wonderful."

The trivia items below may give away important plot points.

The sole piece of art hanging in Leland Townsend's otherwise white on white office is a painting by David Acosta's father Leon.

During a July 2021 interview with Katy Kroll in "Looper," Michael Emerson said that despite his long acting career and his extensive history of playing villains, one storyline in this show's first season did give him pause: "In Season 1, the episode that scared me the most, that worried me the most, was maybe one of the best. It's the one where I sort of convince a young incel man to get revenge on women with guns. That was one where I thought, 'Oh shoot, this is not just bad, this is sort of the badness of our cultural moment. And sort of frightening to portray.... That was one where, I don't know, I had to get some reassurances that this wasn't too far, that this wasn't beyond the pale, that this wasn't somehow a destructive performance in the real world. But the way it was written and the way the episode ended, I think, it was good. These are the issues and the dilemmas that [co-creators Robert and Michelle King] like to explore. And I like that, too. I think it's smart stuff, and it's for grownups. So, I'm glad we go there, but sometimes it's kind of breathtaking."

Mike Colter has long time recurring role as a drug kingpin, Lemond Bishop, in Robert and Michelle King's other shows: The Good Wife and The Good Fight.

David Acosta was a war journalist before attending seminary school. It is stated he is also a recovering addict from both sex addiction and drug addiction (hallucinogens).
